An Introduction and Showcase of HDR Photography

Well a camera can only record to an extent when exposed to light. We as photographers always try to get maximum details in an image from ambient light, nevertheless the tricky part is when shooting hefty shadows and bright lights you are more likely to lose the smallest details in one range or the other. Even the best photographer wont be able to expose the details in both. Details in shadows will give a washed out highlights, similarly details in those same highlight areas will give the end result in shadows mixing with the dense blacks, and we are left with “Proper” exposure losing bit of details in both. How to achieve all of that detail is what we are discussing today!

What is an HDR?

HDR literally stands for High Dynamic Range and there are various methods of producing images that fall into the category of HDR. Many of these methods differ from each other so we will really be helpful to keep these following things in mind,

  • Regular Means/approaches of taking images have less range then what human eye can see, hence so-called “Standard” or “Low Dynamic Range”
  • High Dynamic Image formats and color spaces have superior values than the standard range formats hence it makes them capable of seizing high details in shadows and highlights both at the same time and actually these are the ones rightly called as HDR, the ones that are captured with special HDR equipment’s.
  • Now coming to what modern digital photographers refer to as an HDR, a post processing technique of combining image data from various digital exposures to create one final photograph by adjusting the contrast ratios that are practically impossible to achieve with a single aperture and shutter speed.

Following are some of the great Examples of HDR Photographs; Mostly HDR Photographs have a very dreamy, unreal, and very vibrant or say supernatural effect. Some of them might even seem as illustrations but are all made out of merging and processing normally exposed photos, Hope that you like my personal favorites shared below!
